![]() Most U.S. workers would face dire financial consequences if they were unable to work for an extended period of time due to a disabling illness or injury. Just 36% of all full-time employees have access to long-term disability insurance through their employers. And individual coverage isn’t making up the difference. There are roughly 150 million workers in the United States but fewer than 6 million individual disability policies in force. These statistics translate into financial suffering for many workers when disability strikes. May is Disability Insurance Awareness Month. It’s a time when the entire insurance industry comes together to do something about the enormous gap that exists between Americans’ need for disability income protection and the actual coverage they have in place. The LIFE Foundation coordinates this industry-wide campaign, and leading insurance companies and other industry groups participate with awareness-building and marketing efforts of their own. How can your company contribute to this important campaign? Use May as an opportunity to remind your policyholders and employer-clients to reassess their disability income plans. Encourage your producers to make an extra effort during May to reach out to businesses and individuals in their communities to discuss the importance of disability income protection. Host lunch ’n‘ learn sessions in your Home Office to remind your own employees of the vital work you do in helping businesses and families prepare for life’s most challenging times. These are just a few of the things you can do in May to help advance the DIAM cause. The LIFE Foundation offers a DIAM Marketing Toolkit to help companies develop their plans for the May campaign. A new version of the kit for the 2010 campaign will be available shortly.
